Hypothesis: Negative Space Time
People will have more and independently
shorter units of Negative Space Time, the moments of time
between planned
time, on which they
place high value as fuel for their standard time activities.

Use
& frequency of pleasure time: "From power-nap to
power-relax"
People
are experiencing more, however increasingly shorter, segments of time
that are unplanned, or unused for “important” or “necessary”
activities.
They are the moments of time in between scheduled meetings or
errands or cooking for the kids. Many technology firms would have us
believe that we want to become more productive in those short moments of
free time while we are waiting in line at the supermarket or for the
next metro. Not so.
What most people want is more effective relaxation, maximizing
the effect of these brief moments of pleasurable “nothing I must
do-ness”. Gone are the days where one could sneak an hour of
television or listen to music before the kids get home.
We need to find our relaxation time during the day to recharge
our human batteries, regain energy and simply relax, as fuel for the
fast-paced lifestyles we have created.
The
industries in the mobility space can play a leadership role in defining the pleasure time
opportunity. From using my handheld device to playing with the MMI in
the my car to escaping with full experience sense gargoyles, they have
the chance to give consumers what they are looking
for and willing to pay for. Ultra short films, games with the ability to
log on later and pick up where I left off, the ability to daydream and
capture my thoughts, do 5 minute yoga, or join a virtual short fiesta. The solutions of the future
will give people greater relaxation in shorter amounts of time,
providing better life balance that is truly necessary for productivity
throughout the day. Something the average future consumer cannot live
without.
